CAR HIRE IN EASTERN EUROPE
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in Europe, British motorists have faced the enticing alternative of pointing their vehicle eastwards after crossing the Channel instead of following a traditional holiday route to southern France, Italy or Spain.
The entrance to the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) into the EU gives a further incentive to explore this fascinating region. But be prepared for some driving conditions. Cash for road maintenance has not been abundant in some areas so road surfaces can be rough. Local vehicles also tend to be older and less well maintained, as well as poorly lit at night.
Standard European road signs are used throughout the region, but the further east you go, the more likely you are to encounter unusual motoring laws. Areas of the Balkans remain risky to travel in so consult the latest advice from the foreign office before you leave.
Driving further east into Russia and neighbouring countries is recommended for experienced travellers only. Although potentially rewarding, road conditions in these countries are poor, crime levels are high and bureacracy tortuous if you run into trouble. |
