CAR HIRE SWEDEN
Sweden's motorways are confined to the south of the country around Stockholm. They are toll-free. More characteristic of the country are the miles of picturesque, lightly trafficked country roads. Many have wide shoulders which it is usual to pull into in order to let following vehicles overtake. Speed limits are strictly enforced - exceed the limit by more than 30kph and you risk having your licence confiscated. The drink-drive limit is much lower than in most countries at 20mg alcohol per 100ml blood. Swedish police are authorised to impose fines for minor traffic offences on the spot but not to collect them (the fines are paid at a post office).
Winter Driving
Winters are severe in Sweden. Roads can be closed during the winter months, and studded tyres are permitted between November the !st and the First Monday after Easter. in spring beware of damage to road surfaces caused by frost.
Traffic rules
Dipped headlamps are compulsory day and night. Overtaking on the right as well as the left is permitted on multi-lane highways with a speed limit of 70kph or less. Merge in turn where two lanes become one. Filling stations are few and far between in the North. Not all sell diesel, and LPG is rare. |
